This 1910 bungalow is one of many in the Vilas Neighborhood built by Cora Tuttle, a self-taught architect/builder and a Madison pioneer of the bungalow aesthetic. The renovation includes a new kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is relocated to benefit from an existing bank of windows that offer a panoramic view of the wooded back yard. An informal dining area replaces the former kitchen area and is defined by a trayed ceiling detail. A new opening for a transom window on the west elevation invites a subtle splash of afternoon light. The custom cabinet is custom designed to serve as a homework/computer station for the family’s children to use as dinner is being prepared.
